Over 80% of welding cable sold in the UK does not comply with the current British & European standard. If you supply black PVC cable it does not comply with the standard, BS EN60974-1 clearly states PVC insulation is not suitable for welding machines. Also much of the low cost cable has less copper than you think, for instance we have seen 50mm cable that actually contains 37mm of copper!
In the event of cable causing a fire or burns or electrocution or other damage, you as the distributor could be potentially liable. Furthermore, if your supplier quotes BS638, this has been obsolete for some time!
The current new standard for welding cables is BS EN50525-2-81 & cables should be marked H01N2-D or H01N2-E.
These cables are far superior to PVC cable, they are covered in a tough yet very flexible EN5 rubber based insulation which is heat & oil resistant & flame retardant (HOFR). The safe current carrying capacity is higher than PVC cables therefore the slight increase in cost is more than offset by the increase in performance & it may be possible to drop a cable size for certain amperages, therefore actually reducing your costs.
